MBABANE –Three Swazis have been nominated to represent the country in the United States of America where President Barack Obama is expected to host a forum in Washington D.C for young leaders.
The three are Samkelo Sukati from Technoserve, Lindelwa Nxumalo from the Lutheran Development Service and Khabo Dlamini, the founder of One Circle.
This is part of an effort to forge strong, forward-looking partnerships in the years ahead.
The forum, which will be held on August 3-5, will be chaired by President Obama and will host approximately 120 young leaders from civil society and the private sector representing more than 40 countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
According to a press release by the American embassy, the three young Swazi leaders were nominated by the embassy and were drawn from civic society and the private sector.
Briefing
"The three met with the American Ambassador to Swaziland Earl Irving for a pre-departure briefing as they are flying out on Sunday. Together with American counterparts and US government officials, the young leaders will share their insights on key themes of youth empowerment, good governance, and economic opportunity," reads the statement in part.
President Obama will host a town hall meeting at the White House with the young leaders to discuss their vision for transforming their societies over the next 50 years.
"The president’s forum with young African leaders presents the US government and American friends of Africa with an opportunity to deepen and broaden a better understanding of the trajectories of African societies, and to reflect on how the next generation are building their communities’ and their nations’ futures – just as their predecessors did in the era of independence from colonial rule.
Topics
In addition to the town hall meeting with the president, the forum will include small-group discussions on topics such as transparency and accountability, job creation and entrepreneurship, rights advocacy, and the use of technology to empower individuals and communities," further reads the statement.
African participants will have an opportunity to meet with grass-roots service organisations to share experiences and strategies.
"As the president said during his state visit in Accra, the future of Africa is up to Africans. The US government’s role in this gathering is as a convener, encouraging networks between young American and African leaders, and pursuing lasting partnerships on behalf of our common security and prosperity,"
