MBABANE – Four children burnt to death in a house while they were left alone without adult supervision.

The incident, happened at Dingizwe area past Lundzi yesterday morning.

A faulty gas stove is suspected to have caused the fire. The children were a boy and a girl both aged 10 from a Ngwenya family and a girl aged 11 and a boy aged 12 with Ngozo and Ndzimandze surnames.

The incident was only discovered yesterday morning and the fire is believed to have sparked in the middle of the night as in the morning there were no flames but only the remains of the damage. According to the police, two of the children belong to a hawker of a Ngwenya surname who had left the children to go and buy clothes in South Africa while their father is employed in the Shiselweni region and was also not with them.

When the hawker left for South Africa she is said to have requested that her neighbours help look after her children and they volunteered by providing the two other children who went to the homestead on the fateful night to sleep there. Police Public Relations Officer Superintendent Vusi Masuku said the children were only discovered in the morning when the neighbours were worried about not seeing the children prepare for school as they normally would on Mondays.

“When they went to check on the children they found the house destroyed by the fire and there were only remains of the damage. It was a tragic incident and police were immediately called and the bodies were taken to Dups mortuary,” he said. It was gathered that the children’s bodies were not recognisable as they were completely burnt and only their sizes were used to try and differentiate them.

The incident has left residents dumbfounded and they have been appealing for aid for the children’s burial through the area’s MP Petros Mavimbela. Masuku said police had since launched serious investigations to try and ascertain the real cause of the fire.
