Rovers’ ‘Mroma’ killed
By CHRIS DLAMINI - SWAZI TIMES-28-Sep-2009
MBABANE – Barely a week after the tragic death of Sihlangu player Mduduzi Dlamini, another tragedy has struck the football fraternity following the death of Mhlambanyatsi Rovers’ talented left winger Bongani ‘Mroma’ Khumalo.
He too died tragically in a car accident.
Khumalo was involved in the accident in South Africa, where he had travelled on duty, as he was a nurse at the Mankayane Government Hospital.
While details of the accident were scanty at the time this report was compiled, it was, however, confirmed that the left footed ball juggler is no more.
It was established that the accident happened on Saturday. However, he was unfortunate as he did not survive the accident, which comes barely a week since the nasty one involving Sihlangu players at the notorious Malagwane Hill. The Sihlangu accident claimed one life and left other players seriously injured such that Mbabane Swallows midfielder Lwazi ‘Zidane’ Maziya is still in hospital, while Green Mamba goalkeeper Njabuliso Simelane needs the aid of crutches.
When Rovers’ Manager Douglas Dladla was reached, he confirmed the matter but said he did not have all the details as all he knew was what he heard from other sources, but was yet to find out upon arriving at the player’s homestead. “We’re going there now as a team and that’s where we’ll get to know what really happened. It’s so sad and a huge loss to us and the nation at large,” he said.
Khumalo was an asset at Rovers and whenever he did not play, there would always be a void in the midfield. His demise came when his team really needed him as they have not won a game since the league started. Rovers’ Manager Dladla said the player had reported his absence during their game against Umbelebele, which they lost 1-2 on Saturday.
