Six Mantenga members ill after Europe trip
By Nokukhanya Aimienoho - SWAZI OBSERVER-21-Sep-2009
FEMALE members of the Mantenga Cultural Group are said to have suddenly taken ill, shortly after their return to the country.
What is especially unusual about this is that six female members of the group fell ill at the same time.
Luckily, it had nothing to do with Swine Flu. The group had been out of the country for more than two months in Europe, representing the country during the 39th World Folk Dance Festival which saw them walking away with the ‘best traditional group in the world’ title.
It is upon their return to Swaziland that these females started ‘feeling poorly’. A Swazi delegation that comprised of 17 members from Mantenga Cultural Village and 17 from Matsamo Village made the trip abroad. An impeccable source who preferred anonymity confirmed that she was among the six girls who fell ill.
“It was just us girls who were sick. None of the guys fell sick. It actually happened soon after we got back. Otherwise, we were alright while we were in Europe,”, she said. Questioned about her symptoms, she listed constant headaches and nosebleeds as her main discomforts. She went on to say she sees nothing sinister in her and her fellow group members taking ill.
Furthermore, it is said they are on the road to recovery. The group returned early this month with prizes for best costumes, dance and technical presentation, instrumental authenticity, special prize for music performance, special prize for folk songs and folk singing as well as special prize for best choreography.
Their tour itinerary included France, The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and Italy.
