Heroic off-duty cop foils E200 000 Tiger City heist
By LINDA JELE SWAZI TIMES-10-Sep-2009
MANZINI – An off-duty police officer showed bravery when he foiled an attempted robbery at a filling station of E200 000 by four armed men.
Constable Mduduzi Makhanya, stationed at Manzini police station, was running private errands at the Tiger City when he apprehended a 19-year old man from Fairview North, Manzini. The young man and three of his accomplices had plotted to rob a cash- in-transit vehicle from Swaziland Security Guards. The vehicle had gone to collect money at the Total filling station at the Tiger City complex and transport it to the bank.
According to the Royal Swaziland Police, the four men were travelling in a navy blue BMW sedan and had parked a distance away from the security vehicle. The security personnel were inside the filling station when the men struck. “Armed with a pistol, the man alighted and held up one of the guards, who carried the cash. The security officers resisted and a confrontation allegedly ensued.”
Makhanya, who was in civilian clothing and was at the filling station, jumped on the suspect and throttled him. The police said Makhanya managed to overpower the suspect and grounded him resulting in his pistol falling down. When the three who remained in the BMW saw their counterpart being caught, sped off heading towards Manzini.
Members of the public and security officers who man the building assisted Makhanya to overpower the suspect and they beat him up. Makhanya was then forced to seek refuge for the suspect in one of shops as members of the public wanted to beat him up.
The other three suspects are still on the run and police are still investigating. Police Public Relations Officer Superintendent Vusi Masuku said the accused would appear before the Manzini Magistrate’s Court today.
