Drink drivers in for a shock.

Main Section

MBABANE – Drunk drivers can run but cannot hide.

This follows the introduction of new automatic devices to conduct breath tests on suspected drunk drivers. The Ministry of Public Works and Transport, headed by Minister Ntuthuko Dlamini, has already gazetted the ‘Lion Alcolmeter SD400 / SD400P Breath Tests’.

This is contained in Legal Notice No.141 of 2009 (Act No.6 of 2007) dated September 1, 2009. Minister Dlamini, in an interview yesterday, said the newly-introduced breathalysers had already been distributed to all the police stations in the kingdom. Dlamini said the breathalysers were not only technically advanced, but accurate in measuring the alcohol content in the body of motorists.

“The breathalysers are now fully operational for the simple reason that they’ve been gazetted,” the minister said. He said it was his fervent hope that the introduction of the new devices would help reduce the road fatal accidents caused by drunk drivers.

The newly-introduced breathalysers are of the size of a cellphone. The minister said the devices were simple, provided a fast and accurate analysis. Minister Dlamini said doctors had approved of the use of the breathalysers, hence the move to gazette them.
