Main Section

MBABANE – The Mbabane police on Wednesday nabbed a Nigerian for being found in possession of nine kilograms of compressed dagga without a valid licence.

Mike Duru, 33, committed the offence on September 2, 2009 while at Bhikini and was arrested and formally charged at the Mbabane police station. He appeared at the Mbabane Magistrate’s Court and pleaded guilty to the charges preferred against him. He was sentenced to 10 months in prison on the first count with an option of a fine amounting to E1 500 and a month in prison on the second count with an option of E500 fine.

“The sentence is to run concurrently,” said the magistrate. At the time of compiling the report, the Nigerian had not paid the fine. Meanwhile, police from Ezulwini police station arrested a 22-year-old man for stealing a bicycle worth E1 200, which belonged to Thembinkhosi Dludlu.

Machawe Khanyile pleaded not guilty to the charge and the prosecutor applied that he be remanded to custody pending setting of a trial date on Friday. Khanyile is alleged to have stolen a 21 speed platinum bicycle valued at E1 200. The accused was admitted to bail fixed at E200 on condition he should not commit a similar offence, attend remands and stand trial, as well as not interfere with crown witnesses while the matter is pending.
