5 alleged gold diggers arrested

FOUR women and a man have been arrested for illegal gold mining at the Lufafa Mountains outside of Pigg’s Peak town.
The five made their first remand appearance before Pigg’s Peak Magistrate Leo Dlamini yesterday.
They are alleged to have on Wednesday at Lufafa area “acting jointly and in furtherance of a common purpose not being holders of a licence or permit to mine minerals did wrongfully, unlawfully and intentionally mine minerals on land thus contravening the said Act.”
The women are; Khanyisile Motsa (37), Idah Dlamini (46), Phindile Dlamini and Maria Ndwandwe (57) all of Hhelehhele area under Chief Mnikwa and were charged with Piet Ndwandwe (55), also of the same area.
Appearing before Magistrate Dlamini whilst Elsie Matsebula prosecuted, the accused elected to conduct their own defence after their rights to legal representation were fully explained. They asked for bail and it was set at E500 for each but none had paid at the time of compiling this report.
The five accused persons were thus remanded into custody until September 9 pending payment of bail. Trial was set for October 16.
